Wood shredders

Increasing environmental requirements for production at logging and woodworking enterprises makes wood chipping equipment relevant and profitable. As a result of shredding wood waste, raw materials are obtained for the production of MDF, wood concrete boards, briquettes or pellets for heating private houses. Separately, the effectiveness of the use of shredders in logging plots should be highlighted, because heaps of branches, small size and other non-condition are disposed of on the spot.

offers a wide range of wood shredders, which are selected depending on:

  • Requirements for the quality of chips or shredded wood;
  • Composition of raw materials (waste) and their volumes;
  • Directions for further processing.

In practice, a technique is used to line up machines with different types of grinding into a line, which allows obtaining a product with high consumer properties.

Varieties of chippers

The machine for the production of chips can have different power and principle of operation. For example, there are such devices:

chippers for wood chips

- screw. They can be used to chop whole trees or assortments.

- disk. Such a device has a fairly simple design, although it differs from other units in less efficiency. Today, disk devices are more in demand.

- drum. These machines have a large loading window, are very efficient, and can process almost any type of raw material. In addition, such a machine can be called economical, since it does not require a too powerful motor, is easy to maintain and rarely breaks down.

In addition, chippers for the production of chips can be stationary and mobile. And they can also have their own engine or work at the expense of the power of the mechanism on which they are installed.

Types of shredders

At the first stage of processing waste woodworking production, chippers are used. By type, these machines differ in:

  • Drum chippers suitable for processing waste wood and low-grade wood in the widest range of sizes.
  • Disco chippers with 3 ... 4 movable knives fixed on a disc with grooves. The cutting process takes place during the movement of the disk and the passage of a movable knife, fixed on the disk relative to a fixed counter-knife. The size of the chip fraction is regulated by the extension of the knife blade relative to the plane of the disc, which is the base.
  • Single-shaft and double-shaft wood shredders with circular knives have the highest performance. The shredder can process pallets, cable reels, etc., which may have nails, into chips. Chips are of poor quality and further processing requires magnetic separation to remove metal.

Deep processing of wood chips involves grinding to a size of 5 ... 12 mm. For this, a wood hammer crusher or a wood chip machine is used, which has a large number of knives or toothed discs. The feeding into the cutting zone is carried out from the hopper under its own weight or by means of a carriage with a drive.

A hammer crusher crushes wood chips using plates (hammers), which are fixed to the rotor and have a certain degree of freedom. Hammers fly over the sieve and crush the chips.

In some models of chippers, hammers crushing chips are installed on the rotor, in addition to chopping knives. A sieve is installed at the bottom of the machine, which calibrates the chips of the desired size. This arrangement reduces the size of the machine and allows you to get better quality raw materials.

Shredders

Mulchers can be divided into two categories: for chopping up the upper vegetation and chopping the remains of tree and shrub vegetation in the soil.

Rotovators, or forestry cutters, are designed for crushing stumps, roots, stones under the soil level with a depth of 5-70 cm into the ground.

Rotovators have small width guides. The main reason for such a selection is that a high speed of the cutting (impact) working bodies is required to grind wood, while when working in the soil, the speed of the working bodies should be low.

Thus, the technical solutions incorporated in the design of classic mulchers do not allow them to be used as forestry cutters and vice versa. Some manufacturers allow a slight deepening of the rotor cutters into the ground for mixing mulch with the ground, as a rule, to a depth of no more than 3-5 cm.

Mulcher for shredding tree and shrub residues in the soil

There are often situations when an enterprise needs to remove not only stumps from clearing sites, but also the root part with simultaneous aeration of the soil for future plantations (forest, shrubs, agricultural crops, etc.).

Traditionally, for these tasks, it is customary to use rotators with a limited working depth, which are often referred to as a separate term "stump cutters" (stump cutters, stump cutters). According to the principle of operation, they are divided into straight-through, disk and rotary.

The working body of the continuous stump grinder is the rotor, which goes deep into the soil. Passing over the surface, the rotors crush stumps, roots, etc. The passage width is several tens of centimeters.

In a disc grinder, the working body is a disc with cutting teeth mounted on it. When working, the disc moves in different directions and cuts out the stump. These units are capable of removing large diameter stumps, but should not be used on sites with stones.

The working body of the rotary stump grinder is a drill with cutters installed on it. During operation, the rotors are installed on the center of the stump and, rotating, submerge and completely chop the wood.

Like all mulchers, shredders are produced both on their own chassis and in a mounted version - for installation on various machines: tractors, loaders, excavators.

Stump grinders are also an effective way of leveling areas without harming the landscape.

This type of equipment is in demand in the preparation of construction sites, garden and park work, the arrangement of urban and industrial areas and in cases where the uprooting of stumps can damage underground utilities or the roots of neighboring trees left at the root.

In situations where the removal of wild vegetation and branches does not require mixing with the soil, chippers are used, the basis of which is a chopping disc or a drum with installed knives.

The chips obtained as a result of processing can be transported and used at the discretion of the owner. Chippers are distinguished by the type of drive (mounted / trailed on tractors, with an autonomous motor, etc.), by the diameter of the processed material, by the method of feeding (manual / hydro-) material into the grinding chamber.

Construction of machines for the production of chips for smoking

The device for the production of wood chips depends on the principle of its operation. The main element of tenoning machines is the chipping disc, on which the knives are located. It grinds the wood entering the hopper into chips. The disc is secured to a shaft made of steel, which is supported by two roller bearings.

The chips cut by knives are additionally crushed with rotating hammers. Under the action of centrifugal forces, the crushed chips fall on the sieve sieve, and from it into the discharge port. Any device for the production of chips consists of the following units:

  • Metal casing with hinged cover.
  • Bins for raw materials supply and waste collection.
  • Crushing chambers.
  • Calibrating sieves.

Self-propelled and mounted

Mulchers are of two main types: self-propelled (usually tracked) and mounted.

In the self-propelled version, the power plant and all auxiliary systems are combined in one machine with technological equipment. A self-propelled mulcher is a highly functional machine, and quite expensive.

If the company does not need to constantly work with such a machine, then its downtime will negatively affect the economic efficiency of the entire enterprise.

The advantages of our own self-propelled chassis are high cross-country ability and productivity. For enterprises that are constantly involved in the construction of linear facilities or clearing sites from woody vegetation, they are optimal.

But such mulchers also have quite significant drawbacks that affect the increase in the cost of an engine hour:

  • high initial cost;
  • high specific fuel consumption;
  • high cost of maintenance and repair.

Self-propelled vehicles are very passable and have low ground pressure. However, in order to grind even a thick branch, it must be pressed by the working body to the ground, and if there is a layer of snow or weak soil under the machine, then part of the branch will simply be crushed into the supporting surface and "float" in the spring - to the surprise of the contractor and the customer.In this case, it is worth looking for a mulcher among the mounted options of equipment - for an excavator with a lever instead of a bucket, on which a mulcher head is installed on one side, and on the other - a kind of rake. Thus, first a heap of cut residues to be crushed is made, and then the head crushes the heap.

In practice, it is also effective to manually collect felling residues into a common shaft, with further grinding.

Self-propelled mulchers grind stumps, undergrowth and branches flush with the ground. This is preparation for the construction of roads (when bushes and undergrowth are removed in one pass, and a few surviving branches do not bother anyone), maintenance of linear objects, shredding of pre-concentrated branches and undergrowth.

With significant volumes of mulching, self-propelled forestry equipment is likely to be economically ineffective due to the high cost and operating costs. In this case, it is advisable to consider a mounted mulcher for a powerful agricultural or forestry tractor. Attachments on an excavator with its own hydraulic unit are also an effective option. The excavator base can be the same on which the harvester head, loading equipment, directional roll head, excavator bucket are attached.

Mounted mulchers are:

  • with rotor drive from the base machine (mechanical or hydraulic);
  • driven by its own hydroelectric power station with a diesel engine.

The most powerful mounted options allow you to cut and chop trees up to 0.4 m in diameter in one pass.

Attachments are much cheaper, but have lower productivity.

This option embodies the principle of modular machine systems: the ability to equip a self-propelled power plant (base tractor) with various equipment as different technological operations are performed.

The technological equipment of the mounted mulcher can be mounted on various self-propelled machines (tractors, front loaders, excavators, bulldozers), driven from their power plant mechanically (from the power take-off shaft, attached to the three-point hitch of the tractor) or thanks to hydraulic (from the hydraulic system of the base machine) way.

When there is no need to work with attachments, it is removed, freeing up the base machine for other work.

Mulchers mounted on the boom of a hydraulic manipulator, for example, an excavator, allow you to clear the territory in hard-to-reach places. They are convenient for maintaining green areas on slopes, in the right-of-way of linear objects, etc. They are powered by a hydraulic motor connected to the hydraulic system of the base machine.

For small loggers, the simplest option is suitable - a chipping hitch at MTZ with a drive from a power take-off shaft and manual loading. The tractor performs work in the upper warehouse, and can also move around the felling area.

Mounted and self-propelled machines can be divided according to the type of drive of the working body - with mechanical and hydraulic. Units with a mechanical drive are cheaper, but inferior to hydraulic ones in terms of reliability.

According to the type of working body, mulchers are divided into disc or rotary ones. In Russia, rotary ones dominate, disk ones are practically not found.

The rotor of the mulcher is the main working element, it is equipped with movable or fixed blades. Sometimes they are called knives, sometimes hammers.

The cylindrical rotor is installed in the equipment body, which has closed parts (top and side) and an open part (bottom). In the lateral parts there are parts of the rotor drive, as well as guides to ensure the sliding of the technique on the surface to be treated.

The main performance characteristics of a rotor are the strip width it can clean in one pass and its diameter.Larger rotor widths increase mulcher performance, but power consumption and machine weight increase. The rotor diameters determine the height or depth of the cut.

Cutters are quite expensive consumables. Movable (hinged) cutters are installed in recesses and are attached to the axes, stationary cutters are mounted in tool holders.

To increase the service life of the cutters, they are hardened with special brazing, for example, from tungsten carbide. Protective pads can also be used. For each rotor, several types of knives can be provided for chopping tree branches and other various materials. For infinitely variable shredding, the mulchers can be equipped with a hydraulically adjustable folding secondary shredder holder with replaceable counter segments.

When choosing a technique, pay attention to the type of cutting elements. If earlier manufacturing companies presented two or three types of cutters, today their number reaches three dozen.

Self-propelled mulchers are capable of felling trees and chopping them completely

For most businesses, the standard cutters with two hardened cutting inserts, which are available from every manufacturer, will be optimal.

Reinforced and more expensive cutters are more suitable for companies operating self-propelled mulchers in several shifts, in difficult conditions, for which productivity and the minimum time to clear a given area are paramount.

It is important whether the type of cutters that are installed on it is available in the warehouse of the company that sells the mulchers. This is due to the fact that many factories, not wanting to lose income from post-warranty service, periodically change the landing gear together with the mount, which reduces the possibility of the appearance of analogues of other companies. However, this sometimes leads to a delay in the delivery of cutters and, consequently, to equipment downtime.

For safety, when working with a mulcher, pusher frames are used to move the bushes in the process of directional felling of trees. As a protection against the ejection and scattering of wood particles, stones, the equipment is equipped with front and rear protection, which are curtains made of metal chains, plates or rubber.

Due to the high cost of an hour of work, the efficiency of this technique has the following requirements: the result in one pass (servicing linear objects), the concentrated arrangement of the crushed material (if you drive for each branch in the cutting area, there is little sense), favorable external factors (to grind a thick branch or a thin tree, you need to see them, and if it snows, then not everything is visible).

Purpose and advantages of wood chipping equipment

The problem with the disposal of substandard material exists at all logging and wood processing enterprises. Equipment for wood chipping makes it possible to solve the issue of freeing the territory from industrial waste and to increase profitability by obtaining additional profit from the sale of recycled products.

When working with any type of wood, waste is generated in the form of branches, slats, slabs and scraps of various shapes obtained during the manufacture of lumber. Garbage disposal is a costly and time-consuming procedure, alternative to which is a practical way of using crushing equipment. Machines grind substandard into chips or sawdust of the desired fraction, providing raw materials for sale or their own production:

  • chipboard, plywood, fiberboard, wood concrete;
  • fuel briquettes and pellets;
  • pulp, paper and cardboard products.

Small-fraction chips and sawdust in agriculture are used as bedding for livestock, for plant protection and soil fertilization.Shredded wood has good filtration capacity and provides high-quality biochemical water purification from insoluble compounds. Larger waste is required for the operation of boilers, pyrolysis furnaces and gas generators.

Types of machines for the production of chips for smoking

In large-scale production of smoke chips, special lines are installed. They are highly efficient.

The set of equipment for the production of smoke chips includes:

  • Sheepers or crushers.
  • Chip collection bins and transporters.
  • Boilers or chambers or drum dryers for wood.
  • Gas generators.

The choice of equipment depends on the need for wood chips. Other types of wood chips can be produced in the plants intended for its production. For example, decorative.
